Class: Release the Exterior
Subclass: Disperse Wind-Cold
Actions:
Eliminates Cold and Wind from the Exterior and Tendino-Muscle channels
Harmonizes Nutritive-Qi and Defensive-Qi
Calms painful contractions of the back and neck
Promotes sweating
Indications:
Externally-contracted Wind-Cold leading to an exterior Cold deficient condition (fever and spontaneous sweating). The Defensive-Qi is unable to guard the Exterior and the Nutritive-Qi is unable to nourish and stabilize the Interior.
This formula may also be used in treating such biomedically-defined disorders as upper respiratory tract infection, influenza, postpartum fever, allergic rhinitis, angioedema, cerebrovascular spasm, eczema and urticaria.
Possible symptoms and diseases:
Aversion to wind
Back pain
Headache
Pain in the lower back
Painful neck
Eczema
Fatigue (especially in the morning)
Rhinitis
Skin rashes
Pink tongue, thin-white coating
Wiry pulse (Xian)
In cases with high fever, the pulse is faster but relatively slow if compared with other diseases showing identical fever
Preparation::
DECOCTION: 40-50 g/litre until 35 cl remain.
Administration / Recommended dosage:
DECOCTION: Take one cup (the patient should be bundle up to help induce sweating). If the first cup is successful, do not administer a second cup. If there is a little sweating, repeat once or twice, progressively reducing the interval between doses. If no result, pursue medication for 24 hours (1 cup/3 hours).
Contraindications:
Internal Heat.
Wind-Heat.
Alcoholism (according to the Shang Han Lun source text, the consumption of alcohol may generate vomiting).
Note:
During the treatment, the patient should avoid:
Raw or cold food
Spices and spicy flavors
Alcoholic beverages
